Once your vehicle is purchased and the export paperwork is finalized, it enters the shipping phase. This is the physical journey of your car from the foreign port of origin to the Zimbabwean border. Understanding the shipping methods, transit corridors, and critical documentation ensures you know exactly where your vehicle is at all times.
1. RoRo vs. Container Shipping
There are two primary methods for shipping vehicles internationally. The method chosen affects both the cost and the level of protection during transit.
Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo)
RoRo is the most common and cost-effective method for standard vehicle imports. The vehicle is driven onto a specialized cargo ship and secured in a dedicated vehicle deck.
- Pros: Significantly cheaper than container shipping; highly efficient for standard, running vehicles.
- Cons: The vehicle is exposed to the elements (sea salt, weather) and is accessible to port workers during transit. Personal items cannot be left inside the car.
Container Shipping
The vehicle is loaded into a sealed 20ft or 40ft steel shipping container. A 20ft container can hold one car, while a 40ft container can hold up to three or four vehicles depending on their size.
- Pros: Maximum security and protection from weather and theft. You can pack personal household goods inside the container alongside the car (subject to customs regulations).
- Cons: More expensive due to container rental and handling fees.
2. The Major Shipping Corridors and Transit Times
Zimbabwe is landlocked, meaning all ocean freight must be offloaded at a neighboring coastal port and transported overland. The transit time depends entirely on the corridor used:
- Japan to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania): The most popular route for Japanese imports. Ocean transit takes 6 to 8 weeks. Overland trucking from Dar es Salaam through Zambia to Beitbridge or Chirundu takes an additional 2 to 3 weeks. Total time: 8 to 11 weeks.
- United Kingdom to Durban (South Africa): Ocean transit from Southampton to Durban takes 4 to 5 weeks. Overland trucking from Durban to Beitbridge takes 3 to 5 days. Total time: 5 to 6 weeks.
- South Africa (Durban) to Zimbabwe: For vehicles sourced locally in SA, there is no ocean freight. The vehicle is loaded onto a car carrier truck and driven directly to Beitbridge. Total time: 2 to 3 weeks.
3. The Bill of Lading (B/L)
The moment the vehicle is loaded onto the vessel or into the container, the shipping line issues the Bill of Lading. This is the most critical document in the entire import process.
The Bill of Lading serves three legal functions: it is a receipt for the cargo, a contract of carriage, and most importantly, the document of title. ZIMRA will not clear your vehicle without the original physical Bill of Lading (or an official Telex Release). If you lose the original B/L, replacing it is a costly and time-consuming legal process.
4. Marine Insurance
Shipping a vehicle across an ocean carries inherent risks, including heavy weather, shifting cargo, or port accidents. Marine Insurance is mandatory for ZIMRA clearance (it is the "I" in your CIF value). It covers the total replacement value of the vehicle if it is lost or damaged at sea. Never ship a vehicle without verifying that your marine insurance policy is active and covers the specific route.

Arrival at the Transit Port
When the ship docks at Dar es Salaam, Durban, or Walvis Bay, the vehicle is offloaded and placed in a secure transit yard. Your clearing agent will use the Bill of Lading to take possession of the vehicle and arrange the transit bond to move it across the border into Zimbabwe. The ocean journey is complete, and the border clearance process begins.
