Vehicle Import Eligibility: What You Need to Know

Before you transfer a single dollar to a foreign seller, you must verify that the vehicle is legally eligible for importation into Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) and the Ministry of Transport enforce strict statutory instruments regarding vehicle age, steering configuration, and classification. Failing to check these eligibility criteria results in seized vehicles, massive punitive taxes, or cars that cannot be legally registered.

Here is the factual checklist to determine if your chosen vehicle can legally enter Zimbabwe.

1. The 10-Year Age Limit (Standard Imports)

For standard, non-concessionary imports, Zimbabwe law strictly prohibits the importation of used passenger motor vehicles that are more than 10 years old from the date of manufacture.

The Rule: If the current year is 2026, you cannot import a standard passenger vehicle manufactured before 2016. ZIMRA calculates this strictly using the manufacturing date on the chassis plate, not the date of first registration.

2. Steering Configuration (RHD vs. LHD)

Zimbabwe drives on the left side of the road. Consequently, the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) heavily restricts the registration of Left-Hand Drive (LHD) vehicles.

• Right-Hand Drive (RHD): Fully eligible for standard registration. This is why Japan and the UK are the primary sourcing corridors.
• Left-Hand Drive (LHD): Generally prohibited for standard passenger registration. LHD vehicles are typically only eligible if they are specialized commercial vehicles (like certain construction equipment or ambulances) or if they qualify under a specific returning resident rebate (which still requires special VID approval).

3. Special Eligibility Categories (Concessions)
